Wan Yan Hai is an independent Public Health researcher and a gay right activist in China.
He was founder and coordinator of the AIDS Hotline at China National Health Education
Institute (1992-1993). After he was expelled from his post in 1994 for his advocacy for
human rights and his support for health issues concerning homosexuals and sex workers,
Dr. Wan established the Aizhi Action Project, a NGO focusing on promoting HIV/AIDS awareness
and prevention within Chinese society, protecting the rights of HIV/AIDS patients and
supporting equal rights for gays and lesbians. Dr. Wan also played a key role in exposing the
connection between blood transfusions and HIV/AIDS in Henan in 2001.
For the past 10 years, Dr. Wan has been focusing on HIV/AIDS related safer sex education,
gay & lesbian rights, mental health, rights of people with HIV/AIDS, law and policy,
and religious issues. He was a Visiting Scholar at the Center for Feminist Research of
the University of Southern California (1997-1998), a Fulbright New Century Scholar at
the Center for Sex Study of California State University(2002-2003), and a Visiting
Health Fellow at Yale China Association(2003-2004). Currently, he is Visiting Researcher
at the Social Psychology Institute of China Renmin University and Director of Beijing
AIZHIXING Institute of Health Education.
Dr. Wan has won several international awards for his ground breaking work. These include:
Fulbright New Century Scholar Award(2002), 1st Annual Awards for Action on HIV/AIDS
and Human Rights by Canadian AIDS Legal Network & Human Rights Watch(2002), Defenders’
Award by International League of Human Rights(2002), and Yale World Fellow
Award(2003).
